Renting a roll-off dumpster makes it easier to clean up a construction site, remodeling project, or property. Before you start loading, though, it is important to know which materials cannot go in the dumpster.
Certain items require special handling or are not accepted by the disposal facilities we use. Placing prohibited items in a dumpster may result in additional handling or disposal charges, or a rejected load.
Not sure about an item? Call American Companies at 816-966-1161 before you load it.

What Can Go in a Roll-Off Dumpster?
Our dumpsters can be used for many common types of nonhazardous debris, including:
- Construction and remodeling debris, such as lumber, drywall, flooring, and cabinets.
- Roofing materials and shingles.
- Household trash and clean-out debris.
- Furniture and other bulky items.
- Brush and wood waste.
- Concrete, dirt, rock, and soil, subject to weight limits and disposal requirements.
Planning to dispose of heavy material? Let us know when you order. Dirt, rock, and concrete can reach a dumpster’s weight limit quickly. Concrete containing rebar may also have special requirements.
Keep debris level with or below the top of the dumpster. Overfilled or overweight loads may require adjustment before pickup and may result in additional charges.
Where Can I Take Prohibited Items?
Many prohibited items can be recycled or taken to a facility that handles them safely:
- Tires: Contact a tire retailer or local tire recycling facility.
- Fluorescent lights: Check with your city or county household hazardous waste program or a recycling facility that accepts fluorescent bulbs.
- Paint and household chemicals: Contact your local household hazardous waste program.
- Used oil and vehicle batteries: Ask an auto parts store or service shop whether it accepts them for recycling.
- Appliances with refrigerant: Contact an appliance recycler or a company that can properly recover the refrigerant.
- Suspected asbestos: Stop work and contact a qualified asbestos professional before disturbing the material.
- Electronics: Check with a local electronics recycler or collection event.
Acceptance rules vary by location, so call the recycling or disposal facility before you go.
